English: John Smart
Portrait of Charles Abbot (1753-1829) with powdered hair en queue, wearing a dark grey coat, cream waistcoat and lace jabot. signed with initials and dated 1780 Gold frame, the reverse engraved Chas Abbot Aged 22. height 1 3/4 in. (4.6cm) Charles Abbot, born October 1757, was the son of John Abbot, Rector of All Saints, Colchester. Educated at Westminster and Christ Church, Oxford, he was called to the bar (Middle Temple) in 1783. Elected Tory M.P. for Helston in 1790, he subsequently represented Woodstock and Oxford University in the House. He was responsible for introducing into Parliament several practical measures for law reform and, in 1801, promoted the Population Bill that established the first national census. Speaker of the House of Commons for fifteen years (1802-1817), he was created Baron Colchester of Colchester upon retirement. He died in 1829 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. As Charles Abbot turned 23 in October 1780, it may be presumed that the present miniature was painted during the earlier part of that year. |
