The sitter was the son of Dudley, 4th Lord North, K.B. (1602-1677) and his wife Anne, daughter and co-heir of Sir Charles Montagu. Charles North was also created 1st Lord (Baron) Grey (of Rolleston) 24 October 1673, and in 1667 married Catherine, widow of Sir Edward Mosley, 2nd Bt., and daughter of 1st Baron Grey of Warke. Their eldest son, William, became 6th Lord North and 2nd Lord Grey (1673-1731).
