is peculiar powers, andthe public were eagerly intent on thedevelopment of the startling plot, when word suddenly came to them that theauthor was prostrated by an attack ofapoplexy, which t wenty-four hours afterhe was taken, tenninated in his death.He was stricken down on Thursday,the 9th of June, 1870, at dinner-time,after a mornings labor on his unfinishednovel, at his house at Gads Hill nearRochester, in the vicinity of the sceneswhich he was describing in his fiction,and in the realization of the home up-on which his youthful fancy had beenfixed. But one thing appeared to marhis domestic felicity, the sej^arationfrom his wife on some ground of in-compatibility of temper, which hadbeen of some ten or twelve years con-tinuance. On the Tuesday followinghis death, his remains were privatelyinterred beneath the pavement of the Poets Corner, in Westminster Ab-bey, a fitting shrine, by the ashes of hisgreat compeers in English literature,the honored memories of his countryand the world.
