8th of January, 1872, in connec-tion with the meeting of the Chapterof the Order of the Black Eagle, whenthe Emperor-King spoke of the occa-sion as the celebration of a double an-niversary of the most important eventsof Prussiau history. On this day,one hundred and seventy-one yearsago, said his majesty, the first kingof Prussia was crowned; this day, lastyear, my acceptance of the ImperialGerman crown, unanimously offeredme by all the princes and free townsof Germany, was proclaimed. Con-scious of the oblicrations I hav^e assum-ed, I, on the first anniversary of thisgreat event, again express to the illus-trious persons who ofifered to me mynew position, in presence of their rep-resentatives, my deeply - felt thauks, hoping that, by our united efforts, weshall succeed in fulfilling the just hopesof Germany. The Bavarian ministerthen, in the name of the King of Bava-ria, and the illustrious Federate Alliesin the Empii-e, proposed The healthof the German Emj)eror, William theVictorious.

MARY SOMERVILLE, MES. MAEY SOMEEVILLEwasthe daugliter of an officer in theBritish navy, Vice - Admiral Sir Wil-liam George Fairfax, and was born atJedburgh, Scotland, on the 2Gth ofDecember, 1780. She was educatedat Musselburgh, in the vicinity of Ed-inburgh, but in her early life, we aretold, there seems to have been no in-dication of that deej^ly philosophicalcharacter for which she afterwards be-came famous. Her youth was quiteunpretentious, and it was not untilshe reached her fortieth year that hertaste for scientific research began toexhibit itself.* To her first marriagewith Captain Greig, of the Russiannavy, is attributed the means of devel-opment of her latent powers, her hus-band, delighted by her wonderfulaptitude, taking great pleasure inteaching her mathematics and areneralscience. Captain Greig dying short-ly after this union, his widow was, in1812, married to Dr. William Somer-ville, who, after some years service inthe British army, held offices in Ports-mouth and Chelse
