"Das lebensgroße Porträt mit allegorischen Elementen, eines der aufwendigsten und anspruchvollsten Bildnisse Tizians, verweist durch das Beiwerk (Amor, Lanze, Hund) und den Prunkharnisch auf militärische Führerschaft, Jagd und Liebe. Vielfache Bemühungen um die Identifizierung haben noch nicht zu einem allgemein akzeptierten Ergebnis geführt. Wethey versuchte eine Neubelebung von Carl Justis Hypothese, das Bild sei identisch mit einem von Aretino überlieferten, 1552 oder kurz davor entstandenen Porträt des Giovanni Francesco Acquaviva von Aragon, Herzog von Atri. H. Ost schlug mit ausführlicher Begründung den kaiserlichen Feldherrn Gabriele Serbelloni (1509-80) vor. Demgegenüber sprach sich Lehmann für Ferrante Gonzaga (1507 bis 1557) aus, Bruder des Herzogs von Mantua und Feldherr Karls V. In diesem Fall befremdet allerdings das Fehlen des Ordens vom Goldenen Vlies, der Ferrante 1531 verliehen wurde (Ost 1992). Nach bisheriger übereinstimmender Auffassung entstand die Figur um 1550-52, der Landschaftshintergrund erst um 1560-70. Neuerdings vermutet Ost eine Entstehung des gesamten Bildes um 1550."
