About 70 fourth graders at a northeast Portland elementary school received their Every Kid in a Park pass Tuesday morning, giving them free summer access to America’s public lands. The short session at Sabin Elementary School focused on three topics the students were already familiar with: What are public lands; what types or rocks are there in Oregon; and what to bring in your bag during a day hike. With about 80 percent of American families living in cities, the Every Kid in a Park national program is an effort to give children and their families free access to all federally managed lands. The passes give free access to public lands managed by the BLM, the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service, among others. Although the fourth graders were split in deciding if the strawberry chewing gum was an essential part of their outdoor hiking bag, they were generally all excited to get a free EKIP pass and find out it will work for their entire family. Thanks to Sabin Elementary and the Portland Public Schools for allowing the Bureau of Land Management to issue EKIP passes and teach kids about public lands!
