Summary
[edit]DescriptionPortland Transit Mall in 1989 with bus 114 at a Purple Raindrops stop.jpg |
The Portland Mall in 1989, looking south on 6th Avenue at Taylor Street. Bus 114, a 1974 40-foot Flxible "New Look" bus, is loading at the "Purple Raindrops"-symbol stop, on a trip headed to the airport on line 12-Sandy Blvd. One traffic-design element of the mall for its first 30 years, illustrated here, is that the lefthand auto lane (seen on the right in the photo) always ended after two blocks (then reappearing one block later), with traffic required to turn off of the mall after two blocks. This was designed to prevent through private traffic on the transit mall, to avoid potential conflicts with buses and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment along the two mall streets. TriMet's last buses of the 100-series were retired in January 1991, but many older-but-shorter Flxible New Look buses from the agency's 300 and 400 series remained in service through most of the 1990s. |
