Description

The exterior door of the Franciscan church in Fribourg (Switzerland) is a masterpiece of ornamental architecture and sculpture. It can be attributed to the carpenter Wully Zumwald. Made of oak, the single-leaf door has a clear and balanced composition: three overlapping zones that decrease in size towards the top and are separated by a slightly curved cornice. Vertically, Corinthian pilasters on balustrade-like plinths create a tripartite division. These pilasters extend across the centre zone in the form of double volutes resting on consoles up to the cornice. Between these pilasters and double volutes, the bays are carved out with strong mouldings. The panels, pilasters, double volutes, consoles and the crowning cartouche are decorated with wickerwork, acanthus leaves with lattices, fruit, roses and shells. The uppermost zone is glazed. The small lead-connected panes are attached to a wooden frame that crowns the door and consists of a central cartouche with rosettes on a lattice, a basket of flowers and volutes from which the bars of the frame extend. This Regency-style work dates from 1745.
