Description

C'est la plus ancienne des portes de Nancy, elle est édifiée au milieu du XIVᵉ siècle. Ses deux tours jumelles (édifiées en 1463) possèdent des murs de trois mètres d'épaisseur qui ont résisté aux sièges de la ville en 1476 et 1477 par Charles le Téméraire. Ces tours à l’origine crénelées ne reçoivent leur toiture en poivrière (conique), qu’au XVIᵉ siècle. Les fenêtres sont disposées de manière à faciliter des tirs dans toutes les directions. Le lanternon central est édifié en 1616, il contenait une cloche récupérée à l’église Saint Epvre afin de rythmer les heures, de marquer le couvre-feu, les exécutions capitales et les corvées. La porte est de nouveau modifiée en 1861, pour remplacer le placage existant par un décor gothique. Les portes piétonnes entourant la porte sont faites en 1870 par l'architecte municipal Prosper Morey.
