Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Port Moon Small bay on the north Antrim coastline near Benbane Head known as 'Port Moon'.

For hundreds of years this was a salmon fishery, one of many along this stretch of coastline. The small house at the bottom was used by the fishermen and can be accessed by the zig-zagging path down the steep cliffs. As well as salmon, caught using nets strung between rocks, the fishermen caught cod and plaice on baited long lines; lobsters and crabs would also have been caught and there are many decaying creels around the bottom of the cliffs. Kelp would also have been harvested from the sea and shore, laid out to dry and then hauled up the cliffs by winch. The numbers of salmon caught each year varied, but in 1926 and 1962 over 8000 were landed. Salmon fishing finally ceased here in 2002.
