Die Langstreckenrennen der Markenweltmeisterschaft wurden ab 1976 mit so genannten Produktions-Rennsportwagen des neuen Gruppe-5-Reglements gefahren. Dies war das Startsignal für Porsche, den 911 Turbo (interne Bezeichnung 930) zum 935 weiterzuentwickeln. Dabei konnte man die mit dem 911 RSR Turbo im Jahre 1974 gemachten Erfahrungen voll nutzen. Gegenüber dem Turbo RSR mit seinem spektakulären Heckflügel waren beim 935 Form und Größe des Heckflügels begrenzt. Und sie durften die Konturen des Wagens, von vorn gesehen, nicht überragen. So erhielt der 935 einen verstellbaren, waagerechten Flügel, angelenkt zwischen zwei senkrechten Flossen. Auch war es bei der Formgestaltung des Heckspoilers, der wegen eines FIA Beschlusses nachträglich nochmals umgebaut werden musste, nahe liegend, außer Kühl- und Ansaugluftöffnungen auch die Ladeluftkühlung unterzubringen. Da die Gestaltung der vorderen Kotflügel freigestellt war, schnitt man die Oberkante einfach ab, entfernte auch die Scheinwerfer und versah die Flächen stattdessen mit einer Reihe von schmalen Schlitzen, durch die ein erhöhter Abtrieb der Vorderachse erzielt wurde. 600 PS stark, wurde der 935 von Porsche in den Langstreckenrennen der Marken-Weltmeisterschaft 1976 eingesetzt. Die Premiere gelang: In Mugello wie auch beim nächsten Rennen in Vallelunga fuhren Ickx/Mass auf Anhieb den Gesamtsieg heraus und konnten damit, nach fünfjähriger Pause, wieder eine Marken-Weltmeisterschaft für Porsche entscheiden.
