É o símbolo que identifica a vila de Murça. Esta escultura em granito, encontra-se rodeada por lendas populares, não sendo exacta qual a sua verdadeira proveniência e propósito. A lenda mais popular é que no século VIII esta povoação e o seu termo eram assolados por grande quantidade de ursos e javalis. Os senhores da Vila, secundados pelo povo, tantas montarias fizeram que extinguiram tão daninha fera, ou escorraçaram para muito longe. Mas, entre esta multidão de quadrúpedes, havia uma porca (outros dizem ursa) que se tinha tornado o terror dos povos pela sua monstruosa corpulência, pela sua ferocidade, e por ser tão matreira que nunca poderia ter sido morta pelos caçadores. Em 775, o Senhor de Murça, cavaleiro de grande força e não de menor coragem, decidiu matar a porca, e tais manhas empregou que o conseguiu, libertando a terra de tão incomodo hóspede. Em memória desta façanha se construiu tal monumento, alcunhado “a Porca de Murça”, e os habitantes da terra se comprometeram por si e seus sucessores, a darem ao Senhor, em reconhecimento de tão grande benefício, para ele e seus Herdeiros, até no fim do inundo, cada fogo três arráteis de cera anualmente, sendo pago este foro mesmo junto à porca. No entanto, há quem defenda que os atributos masculinos bem visíveis não enganam, e que a Porca de Murça, é na verdade um berrão, do mesmo género dos que se encontram frequentemente na zona oriental de Trás-os-Montes, relacionados com um culto da fertilidade de povos pré-romanos.
