In order to give a picture not onlyof the abundance, variety and beauty THE PROGRESS OF SCIENCE 3°9 of the sea life of our littoral waters,but also of the delicately balanced andinterlocking associations of the animalsand plants composing it, the AmericanMuseum of Natural History in NewYork has been installing a series ofgroups representing the actual condi-tions under which this life occurs atcertain definite localities on the At-lantic coast. Photographic and paintedtransparencies are arranged to showthe surroundings at the locality in ques- ! tion while the animals and seaweeds arerepresented partly by actual specimensand partly by models colored from life.The latest of these groups, as shown inthe accompanying photographs, repro-duces the animal and plant colonies tobe found living below the low-watermark on the wharf piles in the neigh-borhood of Vineyard Haven, Massachu-setts. The pile to the left is covered with the tubes of serpulid worms, overhung by theyellowish masses of the ascidian, Molgula. Starfishes, mollusks, barnacles, sponges,sea-anemones and sis species of ascidians are seen on the central pile. 3io THE POPULAR SCIENCE MONTHLY glimpses of the cottages on the furthershore of the harbor. In the foregroundthe water is shown as though sectionedto disclose the submarine portions ofthe wharf piles with their bewilderingdisplay of living forms. In the centerof the foreground a broken pile is com-pletely covered by a colony of ediblemussels (Mytilus edulis) over whichhas spread the pink and saffron clus-ters of a delicate hydroid (Tubulariacrocea). Other species of hydroids areinterspersed with fleshy masses of rosy-pink sea-pork (Amaroucium pellu-cidum), while glowing dully in thecenter is an orange-red colony of thebeautiful red-beard sponge (Microcionaprolifera).
