The cross-bars carrying the fingersare provided each with two little broomsto sweep off the chips and sawdust. The saws, seventeen in number, arecircular blades twenty-six inches indiameter. They are divided into threegroups so as to avoid the vibrationswhich would result from using only oneshaft of a diameter in proportion to thatof the blades running at ihe high speedof two thousand revolutions a minute. The first two sets of saws trim otT theexterior edge of the wood and cut fourblocks each; then the following set ofseven saws ruts the central section of thebeam into blocks. After this the blocks,drawn along continually by the fingers,pass under rollers, eventually to bepushed out by the following series ofblocks.
