The most important man in groupNo. I and the most important of theentire timing force is the caller. Thisman has notliing to do but to call off thenumber of each car as it passes him. Directly in front of the caller are threemen seated at the shelf or table as illus-trated on the following page. Eachof these men writes down the number ofeach car as called on blank sheets ofpaper torn from the pads and passedto a \Msor who compares them. If theytally, he then passes one along the deskto two men who mark the numbersdown on the lap-sheet. This is a longpiece of paper nailed to the desk anddivided off into squares with the numbersof the cars at the left. Arranged alongthe top are squares, one for each lapof the race.
