fMiles in California EFFECT OF CINDERS ON PIPECORROSION The corrosion of underground waterpipes and gas pipes by straying electriccurrents from street railway lines is com-mon and a serious problem. Yet in manycases the blame is wrongly placed in thisquarter when careful investigation willdisclose the presence of a cinder bed alongthe pipe. A lump of carbon from any source, cinder coal or other material, can form anelectric battery with an iron pipe if thetwo are in contact in moist ground. Theiron becomes the anode against the car-bon cathode. The iron dissolves withconsiderable rapidity until polarizationchecks the electrolytic action. If verynear the surface so that air penetrateseasily the polarizing film of hydrogen willbe oxidized and the iron dissolve with in-creased rapidity. Evidently filled ground is the worstplace for iron pipes and care must betaken in such places to keep the iron fromdirect Metallic contact with cinders orash. 756 POPULAR ELECTRICITY and the WORLDS ADVANCE

CHINCHILLA FARMING IN ENGLAND The above drawing illustrates the first experiment in England at fur farming ona large scale. This experiment is being made by Mr. and Mrs. Johnstone of BurwoodPark, Sussex. They recently sent a collector to Chile, who brought back over a dozenliving specimens of chinchillas and other rare creatures. The chinchilla, which isvalued for its pretty gray fur, is found in the high Andes, and there seems no reasonwhy it should not be bred with success. It is used to great varieties of temperatureand lives on coarse vegetable food; It is said not to drink at all.
