At the end of the fifthday the rajah orderedNero, one of the largestlions in captivity, to bethrust into the cage withthe tiger and Akbar.Surely Nero would put anend to them both, thoughtthe rajah. As the palaceslaves brought the captiveion toward the cage, thetiger crouched in a dis-tant corner, switching itstail in fury and growlinghoarsely. Neros eyes lit up and a roarthat shook the very walls was emittedfrom his huge body. Quickly the slaves thrust the lion with-in the cage and slammed the grated door.The rajah and his favorites gathered inthe huge audience chamber to witness thebattle between the beasts. The foun-tain in the center of the great roomsplashed merrily, a lordly peacockpreened himself as he strutted about andthe throng gathered to witness the com-bat caught its breath with a gasp as thetiger sprang with a roar toward the ad-vancing; lion. The New Rajah Commands That Toru be Burned on the Funeral Pyre of His Predecessor For more than an hour the battle con-tinued between the lion and Akbarstiger. Each beast was scratched andscarred, where the cruel claws of the otherhad torn long gashes in its flanks. Thecage was literally splashed with blood andthe roars of the contestants horrified thespectators, but, at last, the tiger con-quered. Obtaining a death grip on theneck of the lion, the tiger clawed andripped and tore at the flesh of its adver-sary until Nero sank to the floor of thecage a bleeding, lifeless carcass, andAkbar threw himself upon the lifelessform. Aroused to fury, the rajah drew hisjeweled sword from its scabbard and him-self entered the cage. Wearied as thetiger must be, the rajah believed that hecould easily conquer him and then attackAkbar. Alas for the rajahs hopes! No sooner had he stepped within the cage than thetiger leaped for his throat. The rajahsought to ward off the leap by a thrust ofhis sword,
