A house was built at SorgeBay which the party used as a base, andit was here that the artist was found bythe relief expedition sent out under thedirection of Captain Strayrud. demolished large buildings of all descrip-tions, the old tower stood like a sentinel. A FAMOUS LANDMARK The accompanying picture, which re-sembles a huge oil derrick, shows toadvantage one of the most prominentlandmarks in California. It is the oldhistoric electric light tower of San Jose,the former capital of California. Thetower is built entirely of steel. The mainstructure is 207 feet high and is cappedwith a small flag pole.
