ut of sight. And all becauseof the absenceof naturesmedia, the earth-ly atmosphere, for the conversion of theelectrical vibrations of our central lumi-nary into the forms of force, light andheat, absolutely essential for our con-tinued existence. I know there are many unexplainedfacts that militate against this theory, just as there are many circumstancesincluded in the generally accepted theoryregarding the sun being an immenseblazing orb radiating light and heat, justas a red hot cannon ball radiates thosemodes of motion, that cannot be satis-factorily explained either. On whichside lie the strongest arguments? Sun and dynamo, cold and opaque.Ether and wire, neither, under ordinaryconditions, exhibit either light or heat. The atmosphere and carbon are necessaryto render apparent the naturally latentlight and heat of the electrical manifest-ations! The problem will be worked outsome time. C. E. McCluer. Rochambeau Apartments,Norfolk, Va. Oct. 16, 1913 SAN FRANCISCOS PORTOLA CELEBRATION
Text Appearing After Image:
One of the great-est festivals of mer-riment the Westhas ever seen washeld in San Fran-cisco, October 22to 25. It was knownas the Portola Cel-ebration, and was held in commemora-tion of the discovery of San FranciscoBay by Don Gaspar de Portola and the400th anniversary of the discovery of thePacific Ocean by Vasco Nunez de Balboa. During the reign of joy, a mammothparade, held on the third day, had theunique distinction of being dispatched bytelephone. There were fourteen great The Gunboat Float, the Oregon, Equipped with Gunsfor Shooting Confetti divisions to thisspectacle, extend-ing several milesand lasting fourhours. Each divi-sion was started bytelephonic ordersfrom headquarterswhich was also continuously in touchwith the movements of the prodigiousprocession along its entire route. Orderwas thus excellently maintained and de-lays and breaks- entirely avoided. Tall office buildings were garbed ex-tensively in bright flags, emblems andstreamers.
