As he stood con-cealed in the shrubbery and listened tothis villainous plot, Lawrence felt hisblood racing through his veins and longedto spring out upon the men and interrupttheir dialogue, but prudence cautionedhim to remain where he was, until he hadoverheard all the details of their plan. The rascally doctor explained to thecount that it would be necessary for asecond physician to certify to the factsin the case, before commitment paperscould be obtained, and as the two wan-dered farther down the shaded path-way and out of Lawrences hearing, theywere discussing who this second doctorshould be. He Covered the Doctor with His Revolver, Carefully Keeping it Out of the Range of the Counts Vision cealed himself, to await the coming of thephysician. Soon the steps of the doctor wereheard approaching and at the momentwhen he arrived exactly opposite theshrubbery, the American sprang at him.Startled, the man fell backward, butLawrence quickly followed up his ad-vantage and with a revolver held care-lessly at his side covered the physician,while he explained what he wanted.Briefly he told of overhearing the plotof the count and demanded that he betaken back as the second physician, whowas to certify to Flos insanity. Naturally the doctor demurred atfirst, but the revolver proved an over-whelming argument. The-two returnedto the castle and Lawrence was intro-duced as Dr. Black, that being thename he had chosen to assume.
