ARTIFICIAL SURF IN A SWIMMING POOL Mr. Schenck, the proprietor of a NewJersey amusement park, had been worry-ing himself sick in an effort to meet thedemand for something new that thepleasure seeking New Yorker is alwaysclamoring for. The quietly flowing Hud- these boxes are pitman rods and the boxesslide in vertical grooves. The pitmanrods are attached to wheels run by backgearing from a 20 horsepower electricmotor, so that the boxes are pushed alter-nately in and out of the water. When thefirst box slides quickly into thewater, the water displaced by itmakes a wave, then the secondbox is shoved into the water andthe first wave blends with thesecond moving across the pool in
Text Appearing After Image:
Front View of the Wave Mak-ing Machine son gave him his cue—to give the publicreal surf bathing right there nearly 400feet above the Hudson. The pool waseasy enough, but the waves—that wasthe chief difficulty. However, a railroadmechanic devised a machine that wouldmake real waves. The pool itself is 150 feet wide andabout 250 long, and the water varies indepth from almost nothing to fourteenfeet. At the deep end of the pool is thewave making apparatus. It consists ofthree heavy wooden boxes, of consider-able size ranged in a row. Attached to a diagonal wave and, finally, the third boxadds its wave to that of the other two. The size of the waves may be varied byforcing the wooden boxes deeper, thusdisplacing more water, and the frequencymay be varied by running the electricmotor which controls the machine fasteror slower. It is proposed to transmit electricenergy to Paris from a hydroelectricgenerating station on the Rhone River at 120,000 volts. The distance is about250 miles. 7S
