POPULAR ELECTRICITY and the WORLDS ADVANCE 835 BATTERY AND COIL IGNITION SYSTEM In the battery and coil system for automobilesand motor boats the battery may be a set of drycells usually not less than five connected inseries, by which we mean that the outside bindingpost of one cell is connected to central bindingpost of its neighbor and so on for all the cellsused. It may also be an accumulator, commonlycalled a storage battery, this being a single unithaving its positive terminal marked with a +sign and its opposite terminal with a — sign asin Fig. 1, on the preceding page. The current produced by the battery is not ahigh pressure current and unless aided by someother device it could not overcome the resistanceof the wire and have enough push to force apassage across the spark gap, Fig. 2, to saynothing of its increased resistance due to thehighly compressed mixture. The battery current, however, does haveample volume and this volume is used to accom-plish an increase of pressure,
