In the Upper View is Shown the Projectile Leaving the Cannon. The Lower Picture Shows the Breeches Buoy in Use SAVING LIVES WITH A CANNON Saving peoples lives by shooting atthem with a cannon sounds paradoxical, but that is the first step in the methodof rescue followed by life saving stationsall over the world. When a ship runs on a shoal near shore, life savers shoot an iron projectile at-tached to a coil of rope or fine steel cableover a cross arm of the vessel by meansof a small brass cannon. Those aboardthe ship haul in the rope to which is attached a heavier one. The heavy ropeis stoutly secured at both ends and, by abreeches buoy, the passengers are per-mitted to coast to the shore and to safety, one at a time. The first illustration shows the pro-jectile leaving the cannon. The samestring which discharged the cannon wasattached to the shutter release of thecamera; exposure 1/1200 second. Thesecond photograph illustrates, by aroughly constructed incline, the breechesbuoy in use. P
