Text Appearing Before Image:
Some remarkable photo-graphs have been taken latelyof brilliantly lighted thor-oughfares in the larger citiesof the world. To get sharp, well defined pictures in theface of dazzling lights and allsorts of moving traffic is noinsignificant task. The accompanying repro-duction of a photograph of anuptown street in Seattle hasmany points of interest asidefrom the sharply definedbuildings and other objects. It embodies a complete shortstudy of the effect of lightsin a time exposure of thekind. It will be noted at thedistant end of the street theillumination is pronounced. This is caused by the fullglare from the lights of auto-mobiles and trolley cars show-ing squarely into the lens. The result on the print is onesolid halo. The streaks oflight in the foreground are made byautomobiles traveling toward the camera. The heavier dots in the streak werecaused by the cars slowing down inspeed, thus giving the lights more timeto penetrate the photographic plate. The straight line of lights was made by
Text Appearing After Image:
A STUDY OF ELECTRIC ILLUMINATION IN PHOTOGRAPHY on-coming trolley cars. In the lowerleft hand corner of the picture, just be-yond the second cluster light, an auto-mobile was standing when the exposurewas begun. Before it was finished thecar moved off, describing a pretty semi-circle, and leaving- a telltale track. Remarkable Truck Performance The tale of one electric trucks effi-ciency as a carrier of coal is interesting. In one month it hauled a total of 435 tonsof coal—an average of 18.3 tons a day.Its biggest days work was the transpor-tation of 22.1 tons. This truck was in service 229 hours, but was engaged in hauling only 126 hours, the remainder of the period hav-ing been consumed in loading and un-loading. In 119 trips it traveled a totalof 1,005 miles. In a single day it covered63 miles, making seven trips. As the weather is likely to be at itsworst when coal delivery is most needed,it is clear that the electric has proved itssuperiority under the most unfavorableconditions.
