English: Poppies and legumes The bright red dots created by the poppy flowers - Norfolk's county flower - form a nice contrast against the green of the legumes.
Legumes belong to the family of Fabaceae (or Leguminosae); they produce simple dry fruit that develop from pods, such as beans, lentils or peas. Legume plants have the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen, a property which reduces the use of fertilizer and hence reduces costs for farmers, who often grow legumes in a crop rotation in order to replenish soil that has been depleted of nitrogen by previous crops. |
