JPEG file comment | Das Poppenbecker Kreuz, an der Landstraße L 584 von Billerbeck nach Havixbeck auf einem Acker gelegen, in der Bauerschaft Poppenbeck. Es handelt sich um ein rund 4,3 Meter hohes, reich verziertes, gotisches Kreuz aus Baumberger Sandstein.
Das Poppenbecker Kreuz steht der Überlieferung nach an dem Ort, wo der Ritter Sweder von Bevern aus dem Hause Havixbeck am Amtoniustag des Jahres 1487 in Sichtweite des Heimatdorfes tot zu Boden sank. Er war während eines Türkenfeldzugs verletzt worden, hatte Gott um den Sieg für die Christen angefleht und für sich darum gebetet, noch einmal die Heimat wiederzusehen. Die Inschrift auf dem Sockel lautet: ‘Im Jahre 1487 auf / Antoni Dach ist alhier / Gehens Dodes Verstorben / Swer von Beveren’. Weitere Jahreszahlen auf dem Sockel beziehen sich auf Erneuerungsdaten (Zusatz "Renovatum"): 1734, 1853 und 1937. Früher war auch noch die Jahreszahl 1563 mit einem Steinmetzzeichen auszumachen.
