English: Entomologist's aspirator or pooter. This pooter which has given excellent service (far better than commercial variants) is made from a plastic waterbottle, two lengths of plastic (polypropylene?) piping (thick-walled), a piece of net and a rubber band. The tubes are inserted through holes drilled in the cap of the waterbottle and glued into place. Spare bottles(easily obtained) are employed when collecting in new places or different habitats at the same place. Crumpled paper tissue in the bottle limits damaging condensation.Since there is no glass the bottle is safe to carry.

The second tube should usually be shorter (and of lesser diameter to increase suction -this is not so in Alexei Kouprianov's otherwise excellent figure and in many commercial pooters which have same diameter tubes and do not work well). In the case of the plastic waterbottle pooter I use a suction tube of 1cm. outer diameter (wall thickness 1 mm.) and an entry tube of 7 mm. outer diameter (wall thickness c. 0.75mm) and this works very well.The entry tube is made of a harder plastic to take a cork or rubber stopper (not shown). |
