Summary

[edit]
Description

The de Havilland DHC-1 "Chipmunk" is a Canadian-designed basic training aircraft which first flew in 1946 and remarkably remained in use in the RAF until 1996. 50 years!

It was also used by several airforces around the world. Thousands of military pilots, Air Cadets and University Air Squadron pilots had their first "ab initio" flights in them and these small aircraft were affectionately known as "Chippies" by many. I'm happy to be counted as one of those.

Their Royal Highnesses, Prince Philip and Prince Charles both learned to fly in Chipmunks.

Eventually airforces replaced their Chipmunks with more modern aircraft but many were then sold off to private buyers. Today there are many Chippies still cherished and flying, all round the world, almost 75 years on .... There are also many in museums.

The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight continue to operate two Chipmunks, as training aircraft, as do the Royal Navy and Army historic flights.

This rather sorry-looking example was in fact in the process of being restored at Newark Air Museum, in Nottinghamshire, England.
