Summary
[edit]DescriptionPony feeding on holly in Tantany Wood, New Forest - geograph.org.uk - 142548.jpg |
English: Pony feeding on holly in Tantany Wood, New Forest. At the end of winter food for the wandering commoners' ponies is fairly scarce, especially on the lawns and heathland, and so they are often found browsing in the woodland. This pony, alongside the B3056 Beaulieu to Lyndhurst road, is stretching up to reach holly leaves - holly has a relatively high calorific content and is abundant, which more than makes up for its prickliness. It has been suggested that New Forest ponies have slightly longer necks because it is an adaptation for feeding in this way. |
