The line of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway can be seen bisecting it. New Orleans and Metairie, Louisiana are on the south shore (lower in the poto) of the lake, between the lake and the winding Mississippi River. Towards the bottom of the photo is Lake Salvador leading in to Barataria Bay. At upper right is Lake Borgne, here clearly seen to be open to the Gulf of Mexico (compare with 17th and 18th century maps). The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet Canal ("MRGO") can clearly be seen in the center right half of the photo, running roughly horrizontally. The more narrow canal intersecting with it and running diagonally towards the top right is the Intracoastal Waterway; just above on the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain is the city of Slidell, Louisiana. |
