| Description |
English: Ponies grazing on Half Moon Common, New Forest. Half Moon Common is at present over-grazed due to large numbers of commoners' stock (such as these ponies, and also cattle). In 2005 the National Trust bought neighbouring Foxbury plantation (on the right in this photo) which comprises approximately 150 hectares of predominantly plantation woodland. Their objective is to convert the woodland into a mosaic of semi-natural habitats including dry and wet heath, acidic grassland and native woodland. In the later stages of this conversion the new heathland will be opened up to grazing by commoners' stock, reducing the pressure on Half Moon Common. |
