Summary
[edit]DescriptionPond in the woods - geograph.org.uk - 1218918.jpg |
English: Pond in the woods Geologically this area is dominated by the Bagshot Beds (redefined as the Poole formation in 1991). These are sandy fluviatile deposits which were laid down over the London Clay deposits approximately 50 million years ago in deltaic conditions. The extensive periglacial deposits of sands and gravels of the bagshot beds have been exploited commercially for many years in this area and it is characterised by the many abandoned pits. The Bagshots beds are permeable whilst the underlying London clay is impermeable so that where the gravel deposits have been removed down to the clay, the pits, particularly in winter, can fill with water resulting in ponds such as this one. The worked out pits frequently have water in the bottom of them. In the summer the clay tends to get dried and cracked. |
