| Description |
English: Pond at Warren Mill Farm Park, nr Cowbridge About 200 years ago a small tributary of the River Ely was dammed to provide a head of water for powering Warren Mill. Time and nature combined to silt the 4-acre pond to an average depth of 3-4ft and gave it a nice muddy bottom with few weeds. A heavy stock of carp (commons, leathers and crucian) and tench ensure that the water is nearly always well coloured. The carp come in all sizes but some can exceed 16lbs or so and quite a few of the bronze tench here have grown to over 5lbs just like the perch and bronze bream. The masses of roach and rudd contain many individuals well over 2lbs. On the south bank a sturdy board-walk runs the length of the pool under thick trees, a totally different environment to most of the rest of the perimeter, which is open with only scattered trees and shelves gently to the water’s edge. The dam wall alongside the road is not easily fished but there are 40 informal pegs and all water is within reach. Recent improvements have included an extension of the water into a former marshy area, creating an island and a canal-like stretch. |
