Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Pond Field The name of the field according to the 1844 tithe map. Chapel Farm is on the left which includes a Victorian flint barn that has been converted into a bed and breakfast. The name of the farm indicates a site of a former medieval chapel that served the small community around Beechwood. The parish church of St John (Without) is St John sub Castro in Lewes and this portion of the parish is separated from the rest by the parish of Hamsey hence the need for an individual chapel, another was built in the south near Allington Farm. The old barn retained some workings of the original chapel but was demolished in the 19th century to make way for the current one.
