Tradespeople using the Basilica musteither have removed their wares at the close of business hoursor have made the stalls sufficiently secure for protection. Wecan hardly doubt that ordinarily a night watchman was onduty about the building. CHAPTER X THE TEMPLE OF APOLLO In some respects the study of the large temple on the westside of the Forum is especially satisfactory. The building hadbeen completely restored after the earthquake of 63, and wasin good order at the time of its destruction. Though ancientexcavators removed many objects of value, including the statue of the divinity of the temple,much was left undisturbed, asthe interesting series of stat-ues in the court; in addition, anumber of inscriptions havebeen recovered. On the whole,more complete information isat hand regarding this sanc-tuary than in reference to anyother in Pompeii. The identification of this asthe temple of Apollo is certain.

This floor wascomposed of small, lozenge-shaped pieces of green and whitemarble and slate ; of the two narrow stripes between the lozengepattern and the bright mosaic fret along the border one is ofslate, the other of red marble. In the slate stripe was an in-scription. The letters were outlined by means of small holesfilled with metal, every seven holes forming a vertical line,every four a horizontal.
