In the early Fifties, American settlers began to push intothe beautiful valleys which had so long been their homes.At first they were not molested by the Indians, and it wasonly when unprincipled scoundrels had kidnapped their^jhiil-dren by scores to be sold into slavery and otherwise most out-rageously maltreated them that they rose and killed several oftheir worst enemies.
