Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is a polyphemus moth in the process of defensively flashing his underwings to show the eyespots, and trembling them for added effect. The motion did not cause blur due to the sunniness of the morning: it allowed the camera's automatic exposure process to use a fast shutter speed as well as a small aperture and therefore a tight depth of focus. He had been sleeping perched on an exterior lamp. I coaxed him off gently with a twig. He gradually awoke, eventually giving me this defensive display for about 2 seconds, and then flew off to a safer roost under a deck.

I have assessed the moth as male due to the large size of the antennae. I was able to measure corresponding points on my hand to conclude that his wingspan is very close to exactly 6 inches.
