Summary
[edit]DescriptionPolonnaruwa (51094716982).jpg |
Polonnaruwa, North Central Province, Sri Lanka, December 2021. The capital of the Kingdom of Polonnaruwa, the second most ancient Sri Lankan kingdom. It was established by the Raja Raja Chola I of the Chola Dynasty in the 10th Century when he invaded the Kingdom of Rajarata and systematically destroyed the Buddhist civilisation of the northern plains. He replaced Anuradhapura as the capital with a new city – Polunnaruwa. However, in 1214 both Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura were invaded by the warlord Kalinga Magha of the Aryacakravarti Dynasty who burned both cities to the ground. But there are still substantial remains to be seen. Pictured is a stone with the history of Sri Lanka inscribed on it.. |
