English: In its first full-scale submerged launching, the POLARIS missile breaks the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, ignites, and starts on its predesignated flight path to a preselected target area.
On July 20, 1960, U.S.S. George Washington, first of the fleet ballistic missile submarines, was commissioned December 30,1959, and, after preliminary tests with inert models, successfully performed flight tests of the prototype tactical POLARIS missile, off Cape Canaveral, Fla. |
