Summary

English: Inside the camp and looking along the fence that surrounds the place.
To the right is the Nazi administration building where incoming prisoners were processed; it now houses the Visitors' Center and a hotel. To the left are the chimneys for the kitchen. The original kitchen building is painted white, just as it was in January 1945 when the camp was liberated by the Soviet Army. Near the entrance to Auschwitz I, the original camp, was first constructed to hold Polish political prisoners, who began to arrive in May 1940. Extermination of prisoners started in September 1941, and Auschwitz II–Birkenau went on to become a major site of Nazi extermination of the Jews. From 1942 - 1944, trains delivered Jews to the camp's gas chambers from all over German-occupied Europe. |
