Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The image has been placed in a gold frame decorated with hundreds of precious jewels, and stands on an altar of ebony and silver donated by the Grand Chancellor George Ossoliński in 1650.

The spiritual focal point of the complex is the Chapel of Our Lady where the Icon of the Black Madonna is kept.

Art historians say that the original painting was a Byzantine icon created around the sixth or ninth century. Prince Władysław brought it to the monastery in the 14th century.

Despite past attempts to repair the scars on the cheek, they had difficulty in covering up them as the painting was done with tempera infused with diluted wax.

The icon features the Virgin Mary in a black hooded robe holding the Infant Jesus clothed in red and holding on a Bible. Various reasons are given for the name "Black Madonna", it is because of the dark colour of the skin, maybe caused by candle smoke, smoke from when the shrine was destroyed by fire, or darkened when the icon was restored.
