Né le 5 mai 1898 à Sornay (Saône-et-Loire), Lucien VOLET a dû partir au front à ses 19 ans, en mai 1917. Une semaine avant l'armistice, il a reçu la croix de guerre et une citation à l’ordre de son bataillon pour son comportement exemplaire comme chasseur à pied du 56e bataillon : le 23 octobre 1918, il s'est "maintenu toute la journée sur la position conquise, dans l'eau jusqu'à la ceinture". Une fois démobilisé, il est rentré avec son casque et son poignard. Il avait aussi conservé une gourde militaire dans laquelle il a fait boire "de l’eau", en réalité du champagne, à un gradé après la guerre. Lucien VOLET, titulaire de la carte du combattant en 1935, ne parlait pas de la guerre avec sa famille. Mais quand des anciens poilus venaient chez lui et qu’il était question de cette période, il montrait le diplôme de sa citation : ce document, maintes fois déplié et replié, certainement affiché, porte les traces de ces manipulations. Lucien VOLET, qui avait contracté une paratyphoïde à l'hiver 1917, a adhéré après la guerre à une association, L’Union des victimes de la guerre de la Chapelle-Thècle. Il est décédé en juillet 1976. |
