Summary
[edit]DescriptionPoet's resting place - or not^ - geograph.org.uk - 1123385.jpg |
English: Poet's resting place - or not? Kazimierz Wierzynski was a Polish poet, journalist and writer. While still a student, he took part in the Polish independence movement and in WW1 he joined the Pilsudski's legion. Then, as a draftee in the Austrian army, he was imprisoned in Riazan by the Russians. After escaping he took part in the underground organization in Kiev from where he forced his way to Warsaw (1918) and involved himself in capital's cultural life, contributing to a magazine and cabaret performances as well as co-founding the poetry group "Skamander". He was awarded a gold medal in the 1928 Literary Olympics. During WW2, in which he lost his entire family, he continued to champion the struggle for a free Poland. After the war he lived in USA and Europe but died in London. In 1978 his ashes were removed to his homeland where there is a memorial to him in Warsaw (this suggests that his remains are no longer here.)
