English: Pochette, violin with bow and case, violin neck in relation to body style of fingerboard suggests early transitional, purfling drawn on back and belly, exquisite carved detail on extended heel over the back, bow has ivory button at lower end, transitional style suggests it is contemporaneous 1 kit with bow and box maker unknown, England, 18th century maple, spruce, poplar, ebony, (cherrywood), boxwood, gut, length of back 181 mm 1998.60.103 Castle 168 The kit, pochette or dancing master’s fiddle, was a pocket-size violin used for giving dancing lessons. It is played by being held on the forearm. Zillah Castle purchased the kit directly from William E Hill and Sons, London in January 1961. Apart from its bridge, it still had its original fittings, and came with its ‘original box’. It has an unusually carved heel.
