Summary
[edit]DescriptionPoa bulbosa34 plant2 (9169600859).jpg |
Introduced, cool-season, perennial, tufted, bulbous-based, shallow-rooted grass 7-50 cm tall. Leaves are boat-shaped, hairless and narrow. Flowerheads are usually dense, contracted (sometimes open) panicles 2-6 cm long. Spikelets are 3-6-flowered, with copious long hairs on the lemmas. Parts of the spikelets may be replaced by miniature vegetative shoots, which can serve as vegetative propagules. Flowers in late winter and spring. Grows on a wide range of soil types, including slightly saline soils. Colonises bare ground in open grasslands and disturbed sites; very competitive. Palatable to stock, but does not produce a large amount of feed and tops die off over hot summers. Responds rapidly to rainfall and cooler autumn mornings, very quickly producing feed suitable for sheep. However, it is susceptible to rust, which reduce its productivity and palatability. Its low-growing leaves are difficult for cattle to graze, but it is easily pulled out of the ground. Difficult to control in direct drill situations. |
