Description |
English: "The first plough used in New Zealand (Belonged to Mr. J Kemp and first used in NZ on 3rd May 1820)" - Used by the Rev. John Butler black plough with two wooden handles which steer a metal blade at their base, rising from the handle base is an arched beam supported by metal bracing, a metal chain links loops situated on the underside of the beam at the middle and end of the plough, a wooden stake at the base of the rising arch points to the ground on a 45 degree angle (cat w-sheet) The Rev. John Butler wrote in his diary "On the morning of Wednesday the third of May 1820, the agricultural plough was for the first time put into the land of New Zealand at the Kiddi-Kiddi (Kerri-Kerri) and I felt much pleasure in holding it, after a team of six bullocks - brought down (from Sydney) by the Dromedary. I trust that this auspicous day will be remembered with gratitude and its anniversary kept by ages yet unborn. Every heart seemed to rejoice on the occasion. I hope it will still continue to increase and in a short time produce an abundant harvest." (card) |
