Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Built in 1977-1980, this coal-fired power station, known as the Pleasants Power Station, stands along the Banks of the Ohio River just downstream of Belmont, West Virginia. The power station was the site of the Willow Island Disaster in 1978, when one of the concrete cooling towers collapsed during construction due to improper quality control of the concrete and a rushed schedule, leading to the deaths of all 51 workers on the scaffolding actively working on building the tower, who were crushed by falling chunks of concrete and metal scaffolding. The Willow Island Disaster is the deadliest single construction accident in the history of the United States. After the disaster, the power plant construction eventually was resumed, and the power station began operations in 1980. It is scheduled to shut down operations on June 1, 2023.
