Description
Español: La estatua dedicada a Lord Cochrane, del 12 de febrero de 1873, fue el primer monumento de la ciudad de Valparaíso. Su inauguración en la fecha antes señalada, se hizo con toda la pompa correspondiente a tan magno evento, incluyendo salvas de artillería, desfiles militares, regatas, fuegos artificiales, aclamaciones del público y por supuesto, la presencia de Su Excelencia el Presidente de la República, Don Federico Errázuriz Zañartu, junto al primer alcalde Juan de Dios Arlegui, el jefe de la Escuadra Nacional Juan Williams Rebolledo, el ministro de guerra Aníbal Pinto Garmendia, el escritor y tribuno Benjamín Vicuña Mackenna, entre otros. Cada cual dando su correspondiente discurso que ensalsaba tan glorioso momento. En 1895 la estatua fue movida desde la plaza de la Intendencia (actual Sotomayor), a la calle Brasil (llamada en ese entonces Gran Avenida), donde fue puesta en un pedestal que le daba mas realce, y donde se mantiene hasta hoy.
