Description
English: Plaza Vieja - Old Town Square, is in Havana Vieja -Old Havana, cuba.
  • It was originally called Plaza Nueva. It emerged as an open space in 1559, after the Plaza de Armas and San Francisco respectively, although some authors point out that it was the second place in Havana.
  • The area of the square is bounded by Muralla, Mercaderes, Teniente Rey and San Ignacio streets.
  • The square represents the first planned attempt of expansion of the city. It was an area used for different modalities, such as area of residence, commercial and recreational buildings.
Español: La Plaza Vieja se encuentra en la zona de La Habana Vieja. Se le llamó originalmente Plaza Nueva. Surgió como espacio abierto en 1559, luego de la Plaza de Armas y la de San Francisco, respectivamente, aunque hay algunos autores que señalan que fue la segunda plaza existente en La Habana.

El área de la plaza está delimitada por las calles Muralla, Mercaderes, Teniente Rey y San Ignacio. La plaza representó el primer intento planificado de ampliación de la ciudad. Constituyó un área utilizada para distintas modalidades, como zona de residencia, comercial y recreativa, sin contar con construcciones religiosas o de tipo político – militar.

La Plaza Vieja es además en la actualidad escenario de diversas actividades entre ellas espectáculos de teatro de calle, acciones de artes plásticas y variedades circenses.
