Summary
[edit]DescriptionPlathemis lydia 7.jpg |
This is an immature male common whitetail, Plathemis lydia, taken in Maryland. Sometimes classified under Libellula (skimmers), recent molecular evidence supports the seperation into their own genus, Plathemis (whitetails). This species sometimes goes by the alias 'long-tailed skimmer'. Fully matured males have a patternless bluish-white abdomen, while the females have an abdomen similar to this one. The wings, however, indicate this is an immature male. In females the large dark patches on the wings are smaller, and they have dark wingtips, something males lack. Females lack the white wingbase on the hindwings. |
